Lighter, Wider Mercedes-Benz G-Class Spied Testing

Mercedes-Benz has begun testing its next-generation G-Class, even though it’s a miracle such a vehicle still exists.

At first glance, it appears that the G-Class is merely getting a facelift, but there’s a lot more going on underneath the camouflage. For starters, don’t expect the German automaker to overhaul the styling much on the G-Class, considering how iconic its boxy design has become over the years. On closer inspection, this particular prototype appears to be wider than the existing G-Class, with our spy photographers estimating that it is nearly four inches wider.

The big news is how much lighter the next-generation G-Class will be, with rumors suggesting that Mercedes has managed to shave off around 880 pounds from the SUV’s weight. Considering the G-Class hasn’t received any significant changes for nearly four decades, it’s time for Mercedes to take advantage of new technology and lighter materials. Under the hood, you can expect to see the AMG models to be powered by the new 4.0-liter biturbo engine Mercedes is using, as well as various other gasoline and diesel mills for the other models.

The cabin should see a significant overhaul as well, borrowing technology from the new E-Class to bring it to modern day standards.
