Volkswagen previews revised Amarok pickup

Volkswagen is preparing to give the rugged Amarok pickup truck a mid-cycle facelift.
Updating the four-year old truck is a must because many of its rivals — notably the popular Toyota Hilux — were introduced over the past year, and more companies are set to join the mid-size pickup segment in the near future than ever before. Staying true to tradition, Volkswagen won’t make major visual changes to its first-ever body-on-frame truck. The updates will include new-look headlights underlined by LEDs, a revised lower front bumper, and additional alloy wheel designs.
Bigger updates will be found inside, where most trim levels will benefit from the use of improved materials, and receive the latest generation of Volkswagen’s touch screen-based infotainment system. The updates will finally address what critics and buyers consider to be the Amarok’s biggest shortcomings.
It’s too early to tell whether Volkswagen is planning on making any mechanical changes to the Amarok. The current truck is offered with gasoline- and diesel-burning four-cylinder engines, and buyers can pick either two- or four-wheel drive.
The updated Volkswagen Amarok will go on sale in Europe and in other markets, including Australia, in the coming months. It still won’t be sold in the United States, but sources close to the Wolfsburg-based car maker have recently suggested the next-generation model that’s set to arrive before the end of the decade might be developed with U.S. regulations in mind.
